Hey y’all, it’s Mary! When I first got called to be the primary chorister for my ward here in Kentucky, I was terrified. Now, I’ve been the chorister for a little over two years and it’s the best calling I’ve ever had. As I write for Little LDS Ideas (so excited, by the way) I’m going to share what I’m doing with my primary and hope that it can help you! Let’s start with this LDS Singing Time Idea for “If the Savior Stood Beside Me”!
“If the Savior Stood Beside Me” is one of my favorite primary songs. I was ecstatic to see that it is in the program this year. But, it can be a hard song to teach! It’s long and the verses can easily get mixed up. I sing this song to my daughter when I’m putting her down to sleep and sometimes I get confused as to which verse I’m on! That’s what gave me the idea for this LDS Singing Time Idea to help your primary kids learn the first two verses.
Here’s the plan:
The printable comes with two headers, “Do” and “Say.” I’m going to put these on the board and ask the kids to imagine that Jesus was in the room with them right now. What would they do? What would they say? Then, one by one, we’ll look over the lyric word strips also included in the printable and place them under the correct heading. If your kids are unfamiliar with the song, this would be a good time to sing it one line at a time to introduce them to the words and melody.
For senior primary, I’ll probably have the kids come up and do it themselves. This will give the kids a visual separation of the two verses and will also drive home the meaning of the song. Now, with the words on the board, the kids will be ready to sing the first two verses with you.
If you have extra time after completing this activity you can:
• Mix up the word strips and have the kids try to get them in order before you finish singing.
• Send a child (or a few children) out of the room and have the remaining kids hide the word strips. See if they can finish the “scavenger hunt” before you finish singing.
I hope you enjoy this LDS Singing Time Idea for “If the Savior Stood Beside Me” and use it to help your primary! If you do, come back and let us know how it went!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a great day.
