Hey y’all! It’s Mary with another Primary Singing Time Idea! The program song for August is “A Child’s Prayer.” I love this song. I love singing it to my daughter when I’m putting her to bed. It’s amazing. The extra nice thing about this song is that if your Primary is split into junior and senior, the older kids already know it! You can use this time to review and get ready for your program!
That said, I wanted to focus on the little guys for this August 2018 Singing Time Idea. This is a long song, and it can be hard for the little ones to remember all those words! That’s why I came up with a matching game to help your junior primary learn “A Child’s Prayer.”
.
The Plan
Download and print the free printable at the end of this post! Cut along the dotted lines so that each page has two separate pieces. If you want to be tricky, mount the paper onto card stock or something to make sure they can’t see the colors through the page! Randomly arrange the papers facedown on the whiteboard and play memory by having the kids come up and try to get matches.
When they get a match, sing the line with them once or twice. Then, have your pianist play the entire song. Have the kids hum the tune and then sing whatever line you found when you get to it. As they find more lines, add them to the lines you’re singing. So, you’ll slowly be singing more and more of the song until the entire song comes together.
If you do it that way, the kids will be exposed to the melody over and over again, which will help them remember! Plus, they’re getting a visual of how the words fit together to form the song.
.
Extension Ideas
If you have extra time or if you want to challenge your kids, shuffle the pictures or the words and have them put them in order as you sing.
Or, take the pictures away one at a time and see if they can sing it without any help!

We’ll do this tomorrow, thank you so much! This song is so beautiful, but kinda hard to teach. This will really help!
I love this. Thank you so much! For some reason I can’t get the picture parts of the second verse to print all the way. Has anyone else mentioned this? Not sure if it’s just a connection issue between my computer and printer.
Hi Keri. No one has mentioned any printing problems. Let me know if it still gives you problems and we can try and figure it out. Thanks!
As a new Primary Chorister, I needed help. Your ideas and downloads are a perfect help for singing time. We have an unusual situation because we are a Senior Branch and only have Primary when there are grandchildren or other children visiting. Each week our two teachers prepare the lesson and I prepare singing time. It is surprising how often we do have children visiting, and we are always ready for them.
Thank you very much for making your ideas available.
