September 2018 Weeks 3 and 4 Sharing Time Idea: When I Serve Others, I Serve God

Identify the doctrine (memorizing a scripture): Help the children memorize the last part of Mosiah 2:17 by writing on the chalkboard, “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” Invite the children to repeat the phrase two or three times. Ask a child to erase one or two words, and have the children repeat the phrase again. Repeat until no words are left on the chalkboard.

Encourage understanding (hearing case studies): In preparation, prayerfully study President Dieter F. Uchtdorf’s April 2010 conference talk, “You Are My Hands” (see Ensign or Liahona, May 2010, 68–70, 75). Ask the children how we serve God when we serve those around us (we are doing what He would do if He were here). Share a story or a personal experience of service, and explain how it blessed both the giver and the receiver. (You can find stories about service in the Friend or Liahona.) Prepare some case studies that show how children can serve others. For example: “Annie tripped and fell on the way home from school, and her books and papers were scattered on the ground. David stopped to help her up and picked up her books.” “Mary’s neighbor was struggling to carry groceries into her house while her baby was crying. Mary helped her carry her groceries.” Ask the children to act out the case studies and tell who was served (both the recipient of the service and God).

Encourage understanding and application (playing a matching game): Find or draw pictures of people children can serve, such as a parent, a sibling, a grandparent, a friend, and a neighbor. Make a second copy of these pictures and play a matching game with them. When a child makes a match, invite him or her to tell one way to serve the person in the pictures. List the children’s ideas on the chalkboard. For some ideas about how to serve, see Primary 4, 166.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

For my September 2018 Weeks 3 and 4 Sharing Time Idea, I am sharing two great ideas for your Sharing Time lesson. I have included instructions and printables for both to make preparing a little easier. The first game is a fun Cranium-style game that would be a great way to quiz the children on what they have learned about service. The second idea is a fly-swatter “helping hands” game that would be great for both Jr. and Sr. Primary. Both ideas work great for this week. I hope you find these ideas helpful! Enjoy.

Service Cranium Game and Printables

My Service Cranium Game idea is based off of the popular board game. For this game there are 5 categoriesScripture SearchQuestion QuizSinging StarCreative Cat, and Factoid. Each category requires a different task that the children will do all centered on service.

Each card has instructions on what needs to be done. The cards describe an activity that each team will need to do. Some of the activities will have you answer questions, draw, charade, hum, or read a scripture, and they all are about Service.
Some of the cards have a ‘Two Team Play’ on it. When one of these cards are chosen a member from each team will be playing head to head. You could also include the teachers and create some “Teacher Play” cards. When one of these cards are chosen, the child who selected the card gets to choose a teacher to play for them.

The original game uses a game board, but for my Service Cranium game we simply kept score. When a task was completed and answered/guessed correctly, that team earned a point. If it was not completed, the other team got a chance to earn the point.

You can read all about my Service Cranium Game Idea over on THIS POST. You will also find the printables that I included. If you have an questions about the game, please feel free to email me at 🙂

Helping Hands Service Sharing Time Idea

For my second idea, I am sharing a cute idea that I actually shared back in 2015. This activity includes “helping hands” and a fly swatter. This game would be perfect for Jr. Primary, but is fun enough for the Sr. Primary children to enjoy as well.

In the original idea, the outline included this fun idea to introduce the topic: “Have a Primary leader come into the room acting overwhelmed and obviously in need of help. For example, she might be dropping things, trying to carry too much, or calming a baby.

As you watch this poor sister, ask the kids if they think Sister So-and-So needs a few ‘Helping Hands’. They will probably…hopefully say ‘YES!’.

You can then take just a few minutes to remind the children of the story of the Good Samaritan, and how that story teaches us to Serve Others. Read Mosiah 2:17 to the children, you could even show them the Monthly Theme Poster that I created as you read the scripture.

Ask the children if they have ever served their neighbor. Invite a few children to share how they have or how they could serve their neighbor. Then, tell the children that today they are going to play a fun ‘Helping Hands’ Service Slap game to help them think of ways they could serve their neighbor.

The children will be learning how they can serve others by swatting cards with the “Service Swatter”.

Since I have already shared this idea, I’ll just direct you to the original post where you can find all of the details and printables.

Hey Shauna! Thanks so much for all your ideas! They are so great and help me every week!!

I would like to use your Helping Hands swatting game, but I can’t seem to get the printable to work from your old post in 2015. Just wondering if I’m doing something wrong… Let me know when you have a minute thanks!

    1. Hi Aubrie! Not sure what the problem was, but I have updated the links, so it should be ok. I’ll email you the files as well, just in case. 🙂
