Sharing Time Idea from the 2016 Outline
Introduce the doctrine: Bring a variety of books (such as a cookbook, a storybook, and a schoolbook) to Primary, and invite a few children to show these books and the scriptures to the Primary. Invite the children to discuss the similarities and differences between the books, including their authors. Point out that the scriptures are unique because they are written by God’s prophets and are the word of God.
Encourage understanding: Tell the children that there are four books of scripture we use in the Church: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. Explain that we call these the “standard works.” Teach the children about each book. Include a few of the stories or teachings found in each book. Play a matching game (see TNGC, 169) with the names of the standard works and pictures representing a story or teaching found in each book.
Encourage application: Invite several of the children to share their favorite scripture or scripture story. Encourage them to share what they have learned from reading the scriptures. Bear your testimony of the scriptures.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

A new year….a new theme! I am excited about this week’s idea. I got the main idea from an idea I shared back in 2011, but I changed it up a bit. I hope you like it!
Begin by doing the book activity given in the outline. Invite the children to discuss the similarities and differences between the books, including their authors. Point out that the scriptures are unique because they are written by God’s prophets and are the word of God.
Hold up the scriptures and explain to the children that the scriptures are a ‘treasure’. Tell the children that there are four books of scripture we use in the Church: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. Explain that we call these the “standard works.” Tell the children that there are great teachings inside each of the books.
You will then show the children a treasure chest and explain that you are missing all the jewels inside. Explain to the children that their are some very important jewels missing from your ‘treasure’. Without these jewels your ‘treasure’ is not complete. Explain that the jewels are hidden around the Primary room, but they aren’t just ordinary jewels, they are ‘Scripture Jewels’. Ask the children if they would be willing to go on a ‘treasure hunt’ and help you find the missing jewels.

Treasure Hunt Scripture Matching Game:
What You Need:
A treasure chest: you could create a treasure chest (a shoe box would be great) or find a picture of one
Gospel Art Kit pictures: I listed some below that you can use. You will need a full size picture and a small picture to fit on the back of each jewel. I included the small pictures along with my jewel printable.

The First Vision
First, you will need to print out the jewels and attach the small picture, included in the printable, to the back of each one. Here’s a peek at the jewels and pictures I created:
Instead of having the whole picture on the back, I thought it would be fun to only have a piece of the Gospel Art Kit picture. The picture above is just a piece of Ammon Defending King Lamoni’s Flocks. The children will be looking at the piece of the picture on the back of the jewel, and then will be trying to match it to the full-size Gospel Art Picture. 🙂
HOW TO PLAY:
Have the jewels hidden around the Primary room. You will also need to have the Gospel Art Kit pictures posted on a chalkboard or bulletin board at the front of the room.
Invite a child up to the front of the room and have them find one of the jewels. Once they have found the jewel, have the child bring it to the front of the room. Have the child take a look at the picture on the back of the jewel. Have the child look at the Gospel Art Pictures and have them match it to the picture it belongs to.
Once they have found the match, you could tell the children which book it belongs to, and then share a little bit about that particular story. Have them place the jewel inside of the treasure chest once you have discussed it. Then invite another child up to the front to find the next jewel.
A great option you could do for Sr. Primary…have the children tell YOU which book it belongs to. You could have a chalkboard divided into 4 columns (one for each book). After the children have found one of the jewels, have them decide which picture it belongs to. THEN have the child take the picture and place it in the column they think it belongs.
I didn’t include the Pearl of Great Price. I realized after I already created these. If you would like to include those you can just use the blank jewel page. 🙂
