{Sharing Time} March 2017 Week 2 Sharing Time Idea: The First Presidency and Twelve Apostles are Prophets

Sharing Time Idea from the 2017 Outline

Identify the doctrine: Write on the board, “The First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles are prophets.” Tell the children that in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are led by the President of the Church, his two counselors in the First Presidency, and the Twelve Apostles. Explain that the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles are prophets.

Encourage application (playing a matching game): Gather pictures of six members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve, and write their names on separate pieces of paper. Put the papers and pictures facedown on the board. Have a child turn over a picture, and invite another child to turn over a piece of paper with a name on it. If the picture and name do not match, put them back in place and allow two other children to choose. If the papers match, whisper to the two children a gospel principle the leader taught in the most recent general conference (see the latest conference issue of the Ensign or Liahona), and have them act out a way they can live the principle. Invite the other children to guess what they are doing.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

When I was coming up with ideas for this month’s Sharing Time ideas, I decided to do a little searching on Google. I came across the 2012 Sharing Time archive on Sugardoodle, and decided to take a look. I am so glad that I did because I found a great idea that a wonderful sister, Kristen Barrett, shared (HERE is the original idea). She shared the idea for Week 1, but I decided that is would be perfect for the March 2017 Week 2 Sharing Time Idea, so I made some changes, and am so excited to share this idea with you today!

March 2017 Week 2 Sharing Time Idea

For this Sharing Time you will need a picture of each of the members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve (I search by their names on LDS.org).You will also need a quote or teaching that they taught during the last (or recent) General Conference. And since the children are preparing to listen to General Conference, I thought it would be great to include some fun facts about each of the men. Like this fun fact about President Monson:

“President Monson was so rowdy and disruptive as a boy that he made the Primary president cry, according to his biography.”

Ok, maybe that would make those crazy children think it was ok, haha. You can find some facts, HEREHERE, and HERE, Write or type the quote/teaching/fact for each person onto a piece of paper. You will also need a flashlight for this activity.

March 2017 Week 2 Sharing Time Idea

Before Primary, you will need to go and hang up the pictures and quotes all around the Primary room. You can have the quotes/teachings underneath the pictures or you could have them on the back. You could even cover up the pictures with a piece of paper with a question mark on the front, you can print one that I made, HERE! Like in the outline, write the phrase, “The First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles are prophets” on a chalkboard, or have it typed up onto pieces of paper. Now let’s talk about how to play!

Follow The Prophet Flashlight Activity

Have you ever been outside when it’s dark? Can you see very well when it’s dark? No! What do we sometimes use when we need to see in the dark?

Show the children a flashlight, and explain that we use a flashlight to help ‘light our path’. Flashlights can help warn us of dangers ahead of us and can help us from getting hurt.

Show the children the phrase that you have written on the board, “The First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles are Prophets”, and have the children repeat it with you. Explain to the children that we have been given prophets to act as our flashlights. You could then ask why the prophets are like flashlights. You could then repeat the phrase on the board. Did you know that all of these men (the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles) are all prophets? Today we are going to learn a little bit about them, and what they have taught.

Explain to the children that you have several different pictures posted around the room of the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles. You will be turning off the lights, and then they are going to be using the flashlight to find one of the pictures.

While the child is searching for the picture, you could have the other children quietly sing “Follow The Prophet” or “Stand for the Right”, or any other song of your choice.

Once they have spotted their picture, have them bring it to the front of the Primary Room and show it to the other children. You could then ask if anyone knows who it is. Then read the teaching/fact aloud. Continue by choosing another child to come to the front and search for another picture.

Want to make it a little more challenging for the Sr. Primary children? You could have them place the pictures in the right order up on a chalkboard or white board. Before Primary you could go and draw places for each picture on a chalk board. You could have a ‘First Presidency’ area and a ‘Twelve Apostles’ area. When the pictures are found, see if they know the correct order that the pictures go in.

I hope you enjoy my March 2017 Week 2 Sharing Time idea, and are able to use it for your lesson. Sorry I don’t have printables to help make your job a little easier, but I thought it might be fun for all of us to do our own studying of these amazing men that lead our church. I would love to hear if you use the idea, and how it goes, so leave me a comment letting me know!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a wonderful day and a great Sharing Time.
