Sharing Time Ideas from the 2017 Outline
Identify the doctrine (seeing and discussing an object lesson): Show the children a container of many different colors of crayons. Show them a second container with only one color. Ask the children: “If you were going to color a picture, which of these containers of crayons would you want to use? Why?” Explain that having a variety of choices is a blessing. Testify that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us and They want us to make correct choices.
Encourage understanding (coloring): Let the children color a copy of the illustration on page 35 of the nursery manual, Behold Your Little Ones, or invite them to draw similar pictures with the same captions. Discuss who created the things in the illustration and why they were created. Teach the children that Heavenly Father expects us to take care of this world His Son created for us. Ask the children to share ways they can choose to take care of the earth and the creations that are on it. Invite the children to take their illustration home and have their parents make it into a book.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
This week I decided to re-use my choices jars for my January 2017 Week 4 Sharing Time Idea, but to go along with this week’s theme I went ahead and made some changes to my choices cards. The children will be reading cards that share different scenarios of taking care of the earth and the creations on it. They will be deciding whether it was a good or bad choice by placing beans or gumballs into a ‘Choices’ jar. I hope you enjoy my idea.
Before Primary, print out my jar labels and choice cards. You will find 3 sheets of cards. Since this week’s theme talks about taking care of the earth and the creations on it, I decided to include a sheet that discusses taking care of the earth (litter, recycling, etc.) and my second sheet has scenarios about interaction with people (since we are God’s greatest creation. I also included a blank sheet of cards that you could use to write your own scenarios on.
You will need to find 2 jars/containers and attach the jar labels to each one. You will then need to decide what the children will be placing into each of the jars. I only had beans at home, so I used those for my pictures, but gumballs would be really fun. Then you could pass out a gumball to each child and encourage them to ‘Chews’ the right and take care of God’s creations. A few additional items you will need are: Crayons (for the object lesson) and a picture of earth.
January 2017 Week 4 Sharing Time Idea
I really like the object lesson from the outline, and think it would be a great way to begin your lesson. Show the children a container of many different colors of crayons. Show them a second container with only one color. Ask the children: “If you were going to color a picture, which of these containers of crayons would you want to use? Why?” Explain that having a variety of choices is a blessing. Testify that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us and They want us to make correct choices.
This year’s theme is ‘Choose the Right’, but did you know that we should also ‘choose the right’ when it comes to the earth and the creations on it? You could then show a picture of the earth, and ask the children who created the things in the picture, what are some of the creations that we can find on earth, and why were they created?
Show the children the 2 choice jars (one happy and one sad), and explain that these are going to be our choices jars. You could ask them which one they think represents good choices. Tell the children that you have several choice cards that they are going to choose and read. They are then going to decide whether that cards represents a good choice or a bad choice.
When a good choice is chosen, you will add a certain number of beans, gumballs, etc. to the jar, and when a bad choice is chosen they will also add a certain amount to the jar. You could even incorporate a die into the activity. Have the child roll a die before choosing a card. The number it lands on decides how many items they will put in. There are more ‘good’ choices, so your good choice jar should be more full in the end. 🙂 When a bad choice is chosen, you could also ask the child what they could do to correct that bad choice.
Have the cards in a stack, and invite a child up to the front and have them pick a card. You could also make a ‘Punch-a-box’ and have the cards inside or have them hidden around the room, etc.
Close by reminding the children that Heavenly Father expects us to take care of this world His Son created for us. If time allows, ask the children to share ways they can choose to take care of the earth and the creations that are on it. You could then give them the booklet that was discussed in the outline, and invite the children to take them home and color them, and have their parents make it into a book.
I hope you enjoy my January 2017 Week 4 Sharing Time Idea. I would love to hear if you use the idea, so leave me a comment letting me know.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a wonderful day and a great Sharing Time!
