May 2018 Week 3: Prophets Teach Me To Pay Tithing

Sharing Time Idea from the 2018 Outline

Identify the doctrine (reading a scripture and hearing a story): Explain that Malachi was an Old Testament prophet who taught the people to pay their tithing. Ask a child to read Malachi 3:10 as the other children listen for what the Lord promises us if we pay tithing. Explain that “open you the windows of heaven” refers to blessings we receive when we pay tithing.

Encourage understanding (seeing an object lesson): Invite 10 children to the front of the room. Give each one an apple (or other fruit) and ask them to hold their apples up and pretend to be apple trees. Have another child “pick” the apples and put them into a basket. Explain that tithing is one-tenth of what we earn and is usually paid with money, but there have been times when people paid with whatever they had. Ask how many apples the child would give to the bishop for tithing.

Encourage application (discussing tithing): Show a tithing receipt and envelope. Discuss the process of paying tithing. Invite children to share how their families have been blessed by paying tithing. Bear testimony of the blessings that come from obeying the prophets’ counsel to pay tithing.

Sharing Time Idea from Little LDS Ideas

I have to be honest, I love that I have been sharing ideas here on Little LDS Ideas for over 8 years because I have so many ideas that I can re-share with you. Which saves me a lot of time. 🙂

For the May 2018 Week 3 Sharing Time Idea, the children will be learning about tithing. I looked back at my posts and found this great idea that I shared back in 2013 (which happens to be the exact same theme as this year). I hope you like my May 2018 Week 3 Sharing Time Idea and use it for your lesson.

May 2018 Week 3 Sharing Time Idea

In the outline, they encourage you to explain that tithing is one-tenth of what we earn. They then share the idea of having 10 children come up to demonstrate one-tenth. I think this is a great idea, and gets the children up and moving.

Tithing Video From The Friend

I also found a cute little video that might be a great way to begin your lesson. I have taught my share of Sharing Time and Primary class lessons, and one thing that always gets the children’s attention is videos. haha You can check out the video over on the church’s website, HERE.

May 2018 Week 3 Sharing Time Idea: Tithing Piggy Banks

For this activity, there will be piggy banks at the front of the room with different “tithing” amounts on each one. The children will be reading scenarios (as a group or individually) and then figuring out how much tithing they will need to pay. Once they have figured out how much they will pay, they will find the matching piggy bank.

LDS Tithing Sharing Time Idea

I also incorporated “blessing tokens” into the activity to help teach the children that we are blessed when we pay tithing. There are different ways you could use this idea, you can read all about it on my original post, HERE.

My original idea didn’t include any printables, but I have updated the post and included some great printables to help you out. I have included printables for the piggy bank activity as well as tithing slip printables (I included 3 different sizes), so that you can go over filling out a tithing slip with the Primary children like in the “Encourage Understanding” portion from the outline.

I hope you enjoy my Tithing Sharing Time Idea. I would love to hear if you use the idea, so leave me a comment letting me know OR snap a picture of your Tithing Piggy Banks and tag me on Instagram (I’d love to see them).

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a wonderful day and a great Sharing Time!
