Hi! It’s Natalie here with an idea for a fun activity to do with your Young Men and/or Young Women group, friends, or family! I have all the plans and printables you need for a Canned Food Scavenger Hunt.
You and your group will have fun while collecting non-perishable food to donate to your local food bank. There is something unique about the end of the year that urges us to open our hearts and pantries to those less fortunate than us. Make the most of it with this helpful, engaging activity.
Canned Food Scavenger Hunt
Preparing for this activity is pretty minimal: print enough Canned Food Scavenger Hunt printables for your group and let them know when the activity will take place.
On the day of the activity have everyone meet up and hand out the Canned Food Scavenger Hunt lists and large bags to carry donations. Explain that everyone has about an hour to go around the neighborhood and collect items from the scavenger hunt list. Instruct them to return to the original meeting place where all the donations will be counted and scores will be totaled.
Divide participants into small groups and send them out. As you go from house to house, introduce yourselves and quickly explain what you are doing. For example, “Hello! We are Young Women from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we are collecting canned foods to donate to our local food bank. Do you have any spare canned green beans or tuna fish to share with the community?” Asking for specifics, or showing your neighbors the scavenger hunt list, is helpful.
When everyone returns with their collected donations, organize them on tables and tally up their totals. Prizes for those with the highest totals are a fun incentive. Reaching a set goal of so many points is a fun reward too.
Be sure to discuss the importance of helping those in need while expressing gratitude for the blessings we receive. Chrissy posted these Gratitude Printables last year, and I think they would be perfect to give to the youth.
