‘Fill Our Home with Love’: a Family Home Evening Idea

I thought I would share a Family Home Evening Idea that my family did last week. My kids loved it and since it’s on Love, I thought it would be perfect for tomorrow, Valentine’s Day.
A few weeks ago I was trying to think of something we could do for Family Home Evening that talked about loving members of our family and filling our home with love.
That week my 2 kids had been fighting quite a bit, so I wanted them to understand that when we fight we won’t have the Spirit and our home won’t be filled with love. So this is what I came up with.
I found a house template, here, and printed it out. I used pink cardstock for the house and some cute Valentine’s paper for the roof. Then I cut a slit into the roof.
Next I came up with different little ‘love’ scenarios. I printed them onto hearts and then cut them out and laminated them.
That night for Family Home Evening we began with an opening song, ‘Love One Another’. Then we talked about Loving One Another. We talked a little bit about when we are kind and show love to one another our home can be filled with love and the Spirit. But when we fight we are following Satan (my kids have really been into ‘Following Jesus vs. Following Satan’ lately).
Next, I read them a little poem that I found from ‘The Friend’ called:

After the poem I showed them the home that I made and the hearts (I had taped them to a poster-board). I told our kids that we are going to pretend that this is our home and we want to fill it with love. I pointed to the hearts and told them that there are things written on each heart. Some are good, but some are bad. Then I told them that we only want to fill our home with ‘Good’ hearts. We took turns choosing one heart and reading it aloud. If it was good they would put it in the home. If it was bad we left it out.
At the end I asked if we could all try really hard to fill our home with love this week. Then I read the scripture, John 13:34.
It turned out to be a great Family Home Evening that kept my children entertained while learning the importance of loving one another.
So if you’re in need of a Family Home Evening Lesson, here you go. Have a great week and Happy Valentine’s Day!!

For the house template, did you increase the size when you printed it? I tried, and the pattern was so small I couldn’t fit the hearts in the house.

When you printed the house pattern, did you increase the size? My house turned out way too small. The hearts wont fit.

    1. Hi Amy!
I’m sure I did stretch the template to make it as big as I could to fit on a normal piece of paper. I can’t remember for sure, but I’m thinking that’s what I did. And then I probably made the slit/opening a little larger as well to make sure the hearts fit. Hope that helps. 🙂

We did this tonight for FHE- my 5 year old taught and she did great and is so happy to keep the little house. We’ll save the little hearts for another time. Thank you!

BEWARE I just went on the link for the house template and it took me straight to a pornographic web page, the link has probably been corrupted and needs to redone. its disgusting.

    1. Thanks for the comment. I checked the all the links on my post and they all seemed to be ok. Not sure what happened, but I’m sorry it did that.

Thank you so much for sharing your ideas! I know how time consuming it is to come up with engaging FHEs so I really appreciate the work you put in. I’m so excited to use this tonight! BTW – all the links worked perfectly for me
