LDS Teaching Tips for General Conference Talks: Elder Bennett, “Your Next Step”

The last 2 weeks I have been studying Elder Bennett’s talk from the October 2015 General Conference session titled, “Your Next Step.” Today I am sharing some great teaching ideas and printables for his talk that you could use for a lesson in Relief Society, Priesthood, Youth   or FHE. Enjoy!

General Conference Teaching Tips

Elder Bennet began his talk with a question he had recently heard while attending a meeting. The question was, “Who desires to live with Heavenly Father again?” Elder Bennett said that every hand went up. But the next question: “Who has confidence they will succeed?” caused many hands to lower.

I loved this question, and really pondered how I would answer it myself. I thought this would be a great question to begin a lesson as well. You could introduce it by saying:

I would like to ask the same question to all of you with just a few changes to the wording. I want you to honestly answer the question to yourself, no need to raise your hands.

“Do YOU desire to live with Heavenly Father again?”

“Do YOU have confidence that you will succeed?”

You could then share this quote from Elder Bennett’s talk:

“When we perceive a gap between WHO we are now and WHO we desire to become, many of us are tempted to choose to lose faith and hope.”

Satan is hoping that that happens, but Elder Bennet reassures us that we do not have to do this alone. “We have Heaven’s help because of Jesus Christ and His Atonement. The Savior said, “If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me. When faith is exercised, faith increases.” (Elder Bennett).

After discussing Elder Bennet’s talk today, I hope to help each one of us realize that we CAN attain this goal that we each want so badly and are striving for, by following the principles that Elder Bennett shared in his talk.

Group Discussion Activity

The title of Elder Bennett’s talk, “Your Next Step,” gave me an idea for a great group discussion. I decided to go along with that title and use some footprints for this activity. You will be using footprints to help with your lesson, as well as discussing the 3 principles that Elder Bennett shared in his talk.

Before your lesson have each principle section typed onto pieces of paper ready, for those you are teaching, to read. You can have a few copies for each group or one for each person, your choice 🙂

You will also need to print out my Principle Footprints (link available below). There is a footprint for each principle discussed in Elder Bennett’s talk:

Become as a Child

Act With Faith

Overcome the Natural Man

You will also need to include some blank footprints, you can find the blank footprints on, HERE.

Explain that today we are going to be discussing three principles that will help us on our journey back to our Father in Heaven. These three principles are: Become as a Child, Act With Faith, Overcome the Natural Man.

As you read each principle, tape them to a chalkboard (making sure there’s plenty of space between each footprint). Then explain that you are going to split everyone in to groups. Each group will be given one of the principles discussed in the talk. The will need to read it together and discuss it. Show everyone the blank footprints and explain that they are going to be writing down some key points, ideas, thoughts that they had about their principle while discussing with their group. When everyone is finished they will be adding their footprints to the footprints  (3 principles) on the board.

When everyone is done you can invite the first group up (or one person from that group) to come up and share the thoughts that they wrote down onto their footprints. Have them place their footprints on the chalkboard. Then invite the next group up, and have them do the same. Continue until all the groups have shared their footprints.

{This could be a great opportunity for some great discussion. Some people may not feel so shy if discussing in a smaller group.}

After you have discussed the principles listed in the talk, and the thoughts from others, you can move onto discussing the ‘Promised Blessings’ that Elder Bennett discussed.

“I promise that each faith-filled step will be met with help from heaven. Guidance will come as we pray to our Heavenly Father, rely on our Savior and follow Him, and listen to the Holy Spirit. Strength will come because of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Healing and forgiveness will come because of God’s grace. Wisdom and patience will come by trusting in the Lord’s timing for us. Protection will come by following God’s living prophet, President Thomas S. Monson.”

To close…I created these cute little shoe print/footprint handouts you could give.

Your Next Step handout

How cute would it be attached to nail polish, or socks, or a Fruit by the ‘Foot‘. 😉

If you’d like to use my printables for your lesson, just click the link below. There are 3 pages included: 2 pages of the footprints and one sheet of handouts.

We can’t reach our goal by one giant leap, we must remember that it is step by step…little by little. Just keep on trying! I really enjoyed studying Elder Bennett’s talk, and I hope you do too. I hope that we will take what we studied in this talk, and choose to take our next step toward our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. As we do so we will be ‘met with help from heaven.’ We will receive divine guidance, strength, forgiveness, wisdom, patience, and protection.

I hope you enjoy the teaching ideas and printables I have shared with you today, and are able to take them and use them in your own lesson or in your home.

Thanks so much for stopping by, I really appreciate it. Have a wonderful day!
